Michael Middelkoop (Rotterdam, 1986) is an Amsterdam based creative / director in film and advertising. Raised by a Dutch mom and Congo dad. He grew up with Motown soul, MTV, Cartoon Network and Eddie Murphy's Coming to America.
At age 11, Michael falls 9 meters from a balcony. He breaks both wrists and shatters a knee. Stuck at home, his brother rents him 10 videotapes a week. Three months and 120 movies later, Michael learns two things: one, he wants to make movies. And two, never watch Eraserhead after a Jackie Chan marathon.
At 18, he shoots and edits lowbudget videos with friend and fellow director Giancarlo Sanchez under the name DAMSCEAUX. Together, they make their first short film: KAOLO.
At 23, he graduates with a bachelor’s degree in film at the university of Amsterdam. Since then, he navigates between creating international advertising campaigns and directing compellingly quirky films. His work includes campaigns for VODAFONE, GOOGLE, VOLKSWAGEN, 3FM and GREENPEACE; music videos for LIL KLEINE, BIZZEY, HEF and DIO; and art projects featured on FAST COCREATE and PSFK. In 2015, SELL THE JOBLESS wins a Lion at the International Festival of Creativity in Cannes.
In between jobs, he likes to gather creative friends and inspire the next generation with WILD THINGS, a music video workshop for kids from 8 to 12.
